Version for two violins (2016)
World premiere
05.11.2016: Musikstudio Ohrpheo (Berlin), Cecilia and Martin Gelland
About
The piece is an arrangement of the fourth movement of my violin sonata from 2010, created in the summer of 2016. As the title suggests, it is about fine and subtle nuances of the bow stroke. (Such as hair, wood, hair with wood, bow tip, hair with fingernail, hair with fingertip...). While the first violin is tuned in perfect fifths, the strings of the second violin are tuned down a quarter tone (50 cents.). In the course of the piece, however, they are tuned up by an eighth tone. The first part is a very quiet, almost timeless, playaround of the concert pitch A with near and very distant natural harmonics. The middle section deals with the simultaneous interplay of bow and (fingernail) plucked strings. This creates a kind of "banjo effect". The climax is a false prime, played on two strings, which is pressed with an extremely pressed bow. Gradually, the light mood of the opening section returns - the notes become ever softer and sparser, the rests steadily lengthen, and finally lose themselves completely in the expanse.
The piece is dedicated to Martin and Cecilia Gelland, who premiered it in Berlin on 5.11.2016.
